Background
Hampel’s developed the patented Selective Twin Sheet molding process to better address this situation. The Selective Twin Sheet process adds material only where it is needed, in this case, at the hinge area, not to the entire lid. 
The end result is an extremely durable dumpster lid at a competitive price. This gives Hampel’s customer a competitive advantage over other plastic manufacturers.
At first glance the most obvious solution is to increase the overall gauge of the plastic. A thicker plastic would immediately result in more rugged hinge. The problem with this solution is that more material is then used across the entire lid, while nearly all lid failures occur primarily at the hinge area. Therefore, adding incremental cost without benefit.
